tis' the season

Fall in New York is a magical time when the city transforms into a pumpkin spice wonderland, the trees display their stunning autumn colors, and New Yorkers don their favorite leather jackets and trendy fashion looks. It's also the season of the impending holiday chaos, including the dreaded family photo session for your holiday cards. But don't worry, I'm here to make your family session as stress free as possible. Here are some preparation tips to help you look fabulous and remain calm.

what to wear

Don't feel pressured to wear something that doesn't represent you just because it's a special occasion. Neutral colors work well for a cohesive look, but don't be afraid to add some jewel tones for a pop of color. If these photos will be displayed on your wall, consider your home's colors for inspiration.

Avoid having every family member wear a pattern, and steer clear of small checkers on shirts, as they can appear blurry on camera. Also, avoid clothes with extensive graphics, words, or logos, as they can distract from your faces, which are the most important focus. It's best to avoid wearing too much black as it's heavy, takes away details, and shows lint and pet hair. Make sure clothes fit your child and are not too bulk to cover their neck and face.

Layering with chunky knits, cardigans, sweaters, and lightweight jackets adds dimension and texture and allows everyone to stay warm and cozy. If wearing a dress or a skirt, ensure it's comfortable, and wear proper undergarments for sitting.

Shoes matter! Worn down, dirty, or scuffed up shoes can draw attention in a photo, so make sure to pay attention to footwear. Also removed chipped nail polish.

prep tips

Before we start, please remove your keys and phones from your pockets. Consider bringing a tote bag to store these items or put in the stroller. If you wear glasses, be mindful of light reflecting in the lenses and if possible take them off. Consider bringing a blanket for some sitting family portraits that coordinates with your chosen looks though we can sit amongst the leaves as long as they are not wet.

Make sure everyone is well fed and has enough time to get ready. Avoid pressuring the kids to smile or act a certain way. Keep the atmosphere light, fun, and stress free, and let the kids be themselves; the less pressure they feel, the more natural and agreeable everyone will be.

I look forward to capturing some amazing moments with you and your family! If you haven't already booked your Central Park fall family session, you can BOOK HERE!
