feel at ease

As a fellow mom, I understand that having a new baby can be exhausting, and the idea of dressing up for family pictures with your new postpartum body is not something you are necessarily looking forward to. But take a deep breath, I’m here to help. As your photographer, my role is to guide you through this process, making it as easy and stress-free as possible.

Your newborn photos are taken in the comfort of your own home, so wear something that will make you feel at ease. Feeling comfortable is key, especially since you just gave birth and may even be recovering from a c-section, whichever the case, you just brought a human being into this world so try not to be so hard on yourself. Remember, nothing is more beautiful than a mother holding her baby, and that's the focus of our session.

Consider your personal style and what would reflect your family's overall vibe. Please don't feel compelled to wear something that doesn't represent you because it's a special occasion. Though we love to follow trends in NYC, go for something more effortless and timeless so you won't cringe at your outfit choices, as we might do when looking at our 80's mother's photos. (Sorry Mom!) Don't opt for a bodycon dress if you're uncomfortable wearing something that highlights your postpartum belly. Instead, consider a maxi dress or loose-fitting top or sweater, cozy jammies are a fun option too!

keep the focus on the baby

I always recommend you dress in neutral colors to achieve a cohesive look for the whole family. If you prefer to add some color, pastel or jewel-tone shades work better than bright colors, as they can be distracting. Consider your home’s colors. Will these images be displayed on your wall? When it comes to patterns, avoid having every family member in a pattern, and steer clear of small checkers on shirts. They can appear blurry on camera. Please avoid clothes with extensive graphics, words, or logos, as they draw attention away from your face. If you wear black, have a lint brush on hand, as pet hair and fuzz can show up on camera. Remember, the photo's focus should be on the baby, so keep that in mind when picking your outfits.

As for baby, I love capturing all the tiny details you'll want to remember forever. Those little fingers and toes, full lips, button nose, and teeny, tiny ears. To help showcase those details, simple is best when it comes to outfits. Choose clothing that fits well and doesn't bunch up around baby's face or neck or cover their hands and feet.

We can absolutely keep baby swaddled for some images, and my newborn sessions focus on natural, minimally posed photographs that highlight your baby's unique features and your family's connection. I'm also happy to incorporate any special wraps or accessories you have, such as bows, headbands, hats, or sentimental items.

For some of my favorite images, I love photographing babies in simple diaper covers (which I'll bring a variety of options for) to capture that beautiful newborn skin, tiny rolls, and all the sweet details that change so quickly in those first weeks of life. These simple, timeless images often become the ones families treasure most.

Are you still unsure about what to wear? Do you need help picking out the perfect outfit for your newborn pictures? If yes, then feel free to ask me! I am always happy to provide my opinion on what to wear. I understand that this can be stressful, and I would like to make it more relaxing for you. I’m happy to receive a text with some of your options or links to outfits you are considering and help you plan!
